Who we are: Home Care Apps Team
Quick answer: In Malaysia, a registered nurse can do wound dressing at home when your surgeon advises it, but whether insurance pays depends on your policy. None of the three policy wordings we checked names wound dressing as a home benefit, so ask your insurer in writing before the first visit. Facts checked October 2026.
Key points
- Nurses can dress wounds at home: ask your surgeon how often it is needed.
- Insurance varies: a visit usually has to fit the home nursing line.
- Conditions apply: start windows, day limits and a doctor's recommendation.
- Ask first: get your insurer's answer in writing before the first visit.
Does insurance cover wound dressing at home after surgery?
Possibly, but only through a home nursing benefit, because none of the three full policy wordings we searched (Allianz, AIG and Liberty) names wound dressing as a home benefit. A nurse can do the work: Prudential Malaysia's guide lists "wound dressing, catheterisation, or IV therapy" as examples of home nursing (Prudential Malaysia). But in Allianz MediCure's wording, "dressings, splints, plaster casts" sit under Hospital Supplies and Services, which pays "whilst the Insured Person is confined as an inpatient in a Hospital" (Allianz policy wording).
Liberty's Medistar also lists "dressings" in its hospital supplies benefit, and AIG's Medical Care wording does not use the word. So a home dressing visit has to fit your plan's home nursing line and its conditions. Terms differ by plan, so read your own policy wording and Product Disclosure Sheet (the insurer's short summary of a plan's benefits and limits). Our guide to what medical cards say about a nurse at home has examples.
Which part of my policy might pay for a dressing visit?
Look at four places, because the dressing can fall under more than one line:
- Home nursing line. The most likely fit. In the plans we read it applies within a set window after discharge (Allianz: 7 days, after at least 3 days in hospital; Liberty: 31 days; AIG: a maximum of 30 days) and the attending doctor must prescribe or recommend it.
- Post-hospitalisation treatment line. Allianz pays follow-up "by the same attending Medical Practitioner", so this line may suit a dressing at the surgeon's clinic better than a nurse visit at home. Ask.
- MediAsas (pilot). The BNM FAQ lists post-hospitalisation treatment within 90 days (item 11) and home nursing up to RM3,000 a year, 90 days per lifetime (item 13). It does not say which line a home dressing falls under, or whether home nursing after day surgery counts.
- Dressing supplies. The FAQ does not say how supplies used at home are handled, so ask.
Where can a dressing be changed, and what should I ask?
For surgical wound care at home, your surgeon decides how often a dressing is changed, and you have more than one place to get it done. MedlinePlus says "Your surgeon will tell you how often to change your dressing" (MedlinePlus).
| Where | Who does it | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Surgeon's clinic or hospital outpatient | The treating team | Is this post-hospitalisation treatment, and for how many days? |
| Public health clinic wound care service | A clinic wound care team | Ask the hospital or clinic whether it can take your case |
| Home nurse you arrange | A registered nurse | Does the home nursing line pay? Any start window or day limit? |
| You or family at home | Only as your surgeon has shown you | Are dressing supplies payable? |
The Ministry of Health says 803 primary health clinics provide wound care services; the page gives no date for that figure (MOH wound care programme).
What does a home wound dressing visit cost and include?
Home Care Apps publishes a "from" price for a home wound care nurse visit: from RM160, excluding SST, for a visit of 45 to 60 minutes by a registered nurse, as shown on our home page on 16 October 2026. The services page lists surgical wounds among the situations for wound dressing. Home Care Apps says its nurses are APC-verified, meaning each holds an Annual Practising Certificate from the Malaysian Nursing Board.
These are "from" prices, so ask what a quote includes, such as dressing supplies. Our guide to the cost of a home nurse visit explains what to compare, and what a home nurse does after discharge lists the other tasks.
What paperwork should I keep for each dressing visit?
Keep everything from the first visit, because insurers usually ask for the same few documents. The BNM MediAsas FAQ says claims "usually include completed claim forms, medical bills and supporting medical reports" (C19).
- Your discharge summary and your surgeon's dressing instructions.
- The itemised invoice and receipt for every visit.
- The visit report. Home Care Apps provides a post-visit clinical report; families can use it as supporting paperwork, and the insurer decides.
- A note from your doctor, if your insurer asks. Allianz, AIG and Liberty each say the attending doctor must prescribe or recommend home nursing.
Ask your doctor whether a nurse visit is advised, and ask your insurer what paperwork it wants. The BNM FAQ states no claim deadline, so ask for one.
How do I check cover before the first dressing visit?
Ask before the first visit, and get the answer in writing. BNM's FAQ (C11) says to "understand your coverage, eligibility and claims process before seeking treatment, where possible".
- Before you leave hospital, ask who will change the dressing, how often and where. See our hospital discharge checklist.
- Ask your doctor whether a nurse visit at home is advised.
- Find your schedule of benefits and Product Disclosure Sheet.
- Ask your insurer whether the home nursing benefit pays for dressing visits after this operation, the start window, any days or RM limit, what paperwork it wants, and whether you pay first.
- Ask for the answer by email or letter, and keep it.
- Send the claim with the invoices and visit reports, as the insurer asks.
When should I call my surgeon instead of waiting for a visit?
Call your surgeon straight away if the wound changes, rather than waiting for the next dressing. MedlinePlus lists these as reasons to call:
- More redness or pain
- Swelling or bleeding
- The wound is larger or deeper
- The wound looks dried out or dark
- More drainage, or drainage that becomes thick, tan, green or yellow, or smells bad (pus)
- A temperature above 100°F (37.7°C) for more than 4 hours
This list is general information from MedlinePlus (last review date shown as 4/11/2026), not advice for your wound. Your surgeon's instructions come first.
What to do next
- Ask your surgeon who will change the dressing, and how often.
- Find your policy wording and Product Disclosure Sheet.
- Ask your insurer in writing before the first visit.
- Keep every invoice, receipt and visit report.
- For a visit price, send us an enquiry.
FAQ
Who can change a wound dressing at home?
Your surgeon sets how often the dressing is changed and may have given you instructions. A registered nurse can also do it at home: Prudential Malaysia's guide lists wound dressing as a home nursing task. Home Care Apps arranges these visits across Peninsular Malaysia, subject to nurse availability.
How do I claim a nurse's wound care visit?
Keep the itemised invoice, receipt and visit report, then send what your insurer asks for. BNM's FAQ says claims usually need claim forms, medical bills and supporting medical reports (C19). The insurer decides whether to pay.
Who do I ask if the wound looks different?
Call your surgeon. MedlinePlus lists more redness or pain, swelling or bleeding, a larger or deeper wound, or a dried-out or dark look as reasons to call. Do not wait for the next nurse visit.
Does MediAsas cover wound dressing at home?
The pilot FAQ lists a home nursing benefit (item 13: up to RM3,000 a year, 90 days per lifetime) but does not say which nursing tasks count. Ask your insurer before the first visit. See Does MediAsas cover home nursing after discharge?.
