Does MediAsas Cover Home Nursing After Hospital Discharge?

Quick answer: Yes, MediAsas covers home nursing in a limited way. As of October 2026, the Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) pilot FAQ lists a Post-Hospitalisation Home Nursing Care benefit: as charged, up to RM3,000 a year and a maximum of 90 days per lifetime, with co-payment, and your insurer or takaful operator decides each claim.

Key points

  • Yes, but limited: home nursing after a hospital stay is a listed benefit.
  • Two caps: up to RM3,000 a year, maximum 90 days per lifetime.
  • Co-payment applies, and private nursing outside this benefit is excluded.
  • Not stated in the FAQ: how days are counted and the time window.
  • Pilot terms may change at the January 2027 launch.

Does MediAsas cover home nursing, and how much does it pay?

Yes, through one named benefit with two caps. MediAsas is a voluntary medical insurance and takaful plan (Malay Mail, 9 October 2026) sold by licensed insurers and takaful operators (called "operators" below). The BNM MediAsas pilot FAQ (Version 1, 29 July 2026) lists Post-Hospitalisation Home Nursing Care as an outpatient benefit under both MediAsas Teras (the standard plan) and MediAsas Fleksi (the plan with a higher deductible).

Item What the pilot FAQ says Where
Benefit name Post-Hospitalisation Home Nursing Care Appendix I, item 13
Money limit As charged, up to RM3,000 per year Appendix I, item 13
Day limit Maximum 90 days per lifetime Appendix I, item 13
Annual limit Counts inside the Overall Annual Limit: Teras RM100,000 (age 0 to 59) or RM150,000 (60 and above); Fleksi RM300,000 Appendix I
Co-payment Applies to inpatient and outpatient benefits unless the schedule says otherwise Appendix I

The RM3,000 and 90-day limits are explained here.

Does MediAsas cover a nurse at home after surgery?

It can, if the visits fall under the Post-Hospitalisation Home Nursing Care benefit, which follows a hospital stay. Your operator decides whether a given provider and type of visit qualify, so ask before you book. The FAQ does not say whether a patient who had day surgery (listed separately as item 9) counts as hospitalised for item 13. It also states no time window for home nursing. Items 11 and 12, for follow-up treatment and physiotherapy, are limited to 90 days after discharge, and a RinggitPlus explainer (29 September 2026) lists home nursing among treatment before and after a hospital stay. Item 13 itself gives only the lifetime day limit, so confirm the start and end dates with your operator in writing.

What home nursing does MediAsas not cover?

Private nursing outside the home nursing benefit is excluded. Exclusion 15 (FAQ section B, question 16) removes "Private nursing care or non-Hospital nursing care (except the covered Home Nursing Care benefit)". It also removes other care such as sanitaria care and hospice care, and care that does not lead to recovery, conservation of your condition or restoration to your previous state of health. For the kind of tasks a nurse does after discharge, see what a home nurse does after hospital discharge.

  • Caregiver or maid help: Appendix I has no line for a caregiver, maid or personal-care help.
  • Childbirth: exclusion 19 removes pregnancy and childbirth care, including postnatal care.
  • General exclusions: pre-existing conditions (1) and the 30-day and 120-day waiting periods (2 and 3) apply to claims "directly or indirectly" resulting from them.

What does the FAQ not say about home nursing?

The pilot FAQ is silent on several points that decide real claims. Ask your operator, and read your policy wording and Product Disclosure Sheet, about:

  • how a "day" is counted (a visit day or a calendar day)
  • whether a doctor's referral or recommendation letter is needed
  • what qualifications a nurse or provider must hold
  • how soon after discharge the nursing must start
  • whether cashless billing applies (the FAQ describes guarantee letters for Preferred In-Network Providers, and the pilot list names only hospitals)
  • how in-network and out-of-network rules apply to a home nursing provider
  • whether SST (sales and service tax) is part of "as charged"
  • whether there is a deadline to submit a claim

Our guide to claiming the RM3,000 home nursing benefit lists what to ask before the first visit.

Can I get MediAsas now, and will the terms change?

Only through the pilot, and yes, terms may change. BNM's MHIT page (read 16 October 2026) says the pilot runs from end-July to October 2026 with 6 insurers and takaful operators and 10 hospitals in the Klang Valley, involving "staff of selected statutory bodies, GLCs and SMEs", and that "Final product features and pricing will be published during its nationwide launch in January 2027". The FAQ says pilot applications are open to Malaysian citizens with a valid MyKad aged 16 to 70 (C1 and C8). A pilot policy can be amended or migrated to the final version on written notice (A14). Malay Mail reported on 9 October 2026 that Budget 2027 confirms the January 2027 nationwide launch. See what MediAsas is and which insurers offer it.

Can I use MediAsas together with a company medical card?

Yes, you may hold both. The FAQ says MediAsas is designed to complement, not replace, existing cover, and that a customer with an employer's benefit scheme or an existing medical card may still join (A7). It suggests the higher-deductible MediAsas Fleksi for them. The FAQ's own example shows how a hospital bill can be split between an employee benefit scheme and MediAsas Fleksi (Appendix II), but it says nothing about home nursing. Ask your employer's insurer and your MediAsas operator, separately, what each pays for nurse visits after discharge and in what order. Our guide to using a company medical card and MediAsas together goes further.

Who decides whether a visit from a nurse qualifies?

Your operator decides, under your policy wording and the benefit's own definition of post-hospitalisation home nursing. Ask whether the provider and the type of visit qualify before you book. Home Care Apps arranges registered nurse home visits across Peninsular Malaysia, subject to nurse availability in your area. We are not a panel provider of any insurer or takaful operator, we do not offer cashless or direct billing, and we cannot say whether a visit qualifies. Our home page says coverage depends on your insurance plan and that we provide a post-visit clinical report that can be submitted for reimbursement claims. A report does not mean a claim is approved.

What to do next

  • Ask your operator in writing whether the nurse and the type of visit qualify.
  • Ask the doctor what nursing tasks are needed after discharge, and for how long.
  • Read "home nursing" in your policy wording and Product Disclosure Sheet.
  • Keep itemised bills and receipts from the first visit.

FAQ

Does MediAsas cover private nursing?

Only through the home nursing benefit. Exclusion 15 removes private nursing care and non-hospital nursing care, except the covered Home Nursing Care benefit (BNM FAQ, B16). Your operator decides whether a given provider and visit qualify.

Is home nursing under MediAsas cashless?

The FAQ does not say. It describes cashless settlement and guarantee letters for Preferred In-Network Providers, and the pilot list names only hospitals, but says nothing about home nursing (C11 to C16). Ask your operator before the first visit, and expect to pay first unless it confirms otherwise in writing.

Does MediAsas cover home nursing under both Teras and Fleksi?

Appendix I shows the same home nursing limit for both plans. The deductibles differ: Teras charges a deductible per disability, and Fleksi charges one per policy year (B5). The FAQ does not show how either applies to home nursing, so ask your operator.

Does MediAsas pay for a nurse at home after my father leaves hospital?

It may, up to RM3,000 a year and 90 days per lifetime, if the visits qualify under the benefit and the claim is accepted. The operator decides. Ask whether the provider, the visit type and the timing qualify before you book.
