Which Insurers Offer MediAsas? The 6 Pilot Operators

Who we are: Home Care Apps Team

Quick answer: Six insurers and takaful operators are named in BNM's MediAsas pilot: AIA, Allianz Life, Great Eastern Life, Etiqa Family Takaful, Prudential BSN Takaful and Takaful Malaysia Keluarga; for a claim, contact your own operator, your agent or the hospital admission counter. No list for the January 2027 launch is published yet. Facts checked October 2026.

Key points

  • Six pilot operators: three insurers and three takaful operators.
  • BNM's FAQ and the Ministry of Finance both name all six.
  • We found a MediAsas page on only one operator's website: Great Eastern.
  • Benefits are standardised, and you can hold only one MediAsas.

Which insurers offer MediAsas in the pilot?

Six insurers and takaful operators are named in the pilot FAQ from Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) (BNM FAQ, A19). The FAQ lists them alphabetically, and so do we, so the order is not a ranking:

  1. AIA Berhad (insurance)
  2. Allianz Life Insurance Malaysia Berhad (insurance)
  3. Etiqa Family Takaful Berhad (takaful)
  4. Great Eastern Life Assurance (Malaysia) Berhad (insurance)
  5. Prudential BSN Takaful Berhad (takaful)
  6. Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Keluarga Berhad (takaful)

The Ministry of Finance's press release of 6 July 2026 names the same six. The list covers the pilot only, in the Klang Valley from end-July to October 2026. For the basics, see what MediAsas is.

MediAsas insurance or MediAsas takaful: what is the difference?

We labelled each operator from its name; the FAQ does not label them, so ask which version an operator sells. BNM says the conventional and takaful versions give the same coverage and benefits. Conventional insurance transfers the risk to the insurer. Takaful is based on mutual contribution under Shariah principles, through a common fund called the Tabarru' Fund (BNM FAQ, A10 and A11).

The takaful versions are named MediAsas Takaful Teras and MediAsas Takaful Fleksi (A1). Takaful participants do not receive any surplus (A12). For insurance, BNM says there are no fees beyond the premium; for takaful, an Upfront Wakalah Charge is deducted from the contribution (D5). Check the Product Disclosure Sheet for the actual charges.

What is the same whichever operator you choose?

The FAQ describes MediAsas as having standardised benefits and clear policy terms, so one schedule applies (BNM FAQ, A4 and Appendix I):

  • Limits: Teras has an annual limit of RM100,000 (age 0 to 59) or RM150,000 (60 and above); Fleksi has RM300,000.
  • One MediAsas only: you may hold either Teras or Fleksi, across all operators (A13).
  • No switching in the pilot: between operators, from an existing plan with the same operator, or between Teras and Fleksi (A8, A9, A15).
  • Who can apply: Malaysian citizens aged 16 to 70 with a MyKad (C1, C8).
  • Hospital list: enlisted by ProtectHealth Corporation or another entity authorised by the Government of Malaysia (B6).

What can differ is whether and how you can apply, the claim form and channel, and how an operator answers the points the FAQ leaves open. For help with a claim, BNM says to contact your agent, your insurer or takaful operator, or the hospital's admission counter (C11), and you can follow a claim through the operator's official channels (C19).

MediAsas AIA or MediAsas Great Eastern: what could we confirm?

All six names are confirmed by BNM's FAQ, the Ministry of Finance and The Edge Malaysia's report of 6 July 2026. We also looked for each operator's own MediAsas page on 16 October 2026:

  • AIA, Allianz Life, Etiqa and Takaful Malaysia: no MediAsas mention on the pages we checked.
  • Great Eastern Life: a MediAsas page with a general description and a contact form, but no eligibility, plan names or dates.
  • Prudential BSN Takaful: no MediAsas page. It lists a product called Medik Asas, and its brochure, dated September 2024, does not mention MediAsas.

This does not mean the others do not offer MediAsas. BNM says the pilot involves selected participants (BNM MHIT page), so ask the operator or your agent.

What should I ask any MediAsas operator?

Put the same questions to every operator, and ask for the answers in writing. Item numbers refer to the BNM pilot FAQ.

Topic Ask the operator What the pilot FAQ says
Applying Do you sell Teras, Fleksi or both, and can I apply now? Lists six operators; does not say who sells which plan (A19)
Switching Can I move to or from you after the national launch? Not allowed in the pilot; details at launch (A8, A9)
Home nursing How are the 90 days counted? Is a doctor's letter needed? Does cashless apply? Silent; only the RM3,000 and 90-day limits (Appendix I, item 13)
Claims Which form, channel and documents? Is there a deadline? Usual documents: claim forms, medical bills, medical reports (C19); no deadline stated
Hospitals Which preferred hospitals can I use, and how do I get a Guarantee Letter? Ten pilot hospitals (B17); request through the hospital (C15)

Will the same insurers offer MediAsas from January 2027?

Not confirmed. No operator list for the national launch is published in the BNM pages or news we read. One undated BNM page says the list of participating operators "will be announced in due course". BNM's white paper says an insurer or takaful operator that wants to offer its own medical and health products must also offer the base plan. Malay Mail reported a similar requirement in August 2026. If it applies, more operators could join, but no list is out.

Budget 2027 confirmed a nationwide launch in January 2027. BNM says final features and pricing will be published then.

Where does home nursing fit in?

MediAsas has a Post-Hospitalisation Home Nursing Care benefit: "as charged", up to RM3,000 a year and a maximum of 90 days per lifetime (BNM FAQ, Appendix I item 13). The operator decides each claim. Read does MediAsas cover home nursing after discharge and how to claim the RM3,000 benefit.

Home Care Apps arranges registered nurse home visits, with "from" prices on our home page. We are a home nursing provider, not an insurer, takaful operator or panel provider of any operator. We do not claim that any operator endorses us or covers our visits, so ask your operator before you book.

What to do next

  • Ask your agent or operator whether you can apply now, and which version they sell.
  • Use the questions in the table above, and ask for the answers in writing.
  • Read the Product Disclosure Sheet and policy wording before you apply.
  • Check BNM's MHIT page for the national operator list after January 2027.

FAQ

Which insurers offer MediAsas?

In the pilot: AIA, Allianz Life, Etiqa Family Takaful, Great Eastern Life, Prudential BSN Takaful and Takaful Malaysia Keluarga (BNM FAQ, A19). No list for the January 2027 national launch is published yet.

Which MediAsas insurers are takaful?

Judging by their names, Etiqa Family Takaful, Prudential BSN Takaful and Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Keluarga. Takaful versions are called MediAsas Takaful Teras and Fleksi and give the same coverage as the conventional ones (BNM FAQ, A1 and A10). Ask each operator to confirm.

Can I switch insurers during the pilot?

No. BNM says switching between operators is not allowed in the pilot, and details will come at the national launch (BNM FAQ, A8). Moving from an existing plan with the same operator is not available either (A9).

Is Prudential BSN's Medik Asas the same as MediAsas?

We found no sign that it is. The Medik Asas brochure is dated September 2024 and describes a medical rider, and neither it nor the appendix dated 10 May 2025 mentions MediAsas. Ask Prudential BSN Takaful before assuming.

Can I hold MediAsas with two insurers?

No. BNM says a customer may hold only one MediAsas, either Teras or Fleksi, at any one time across all insurers and takaful operators (BNM FAQ, A13).

How we can help

Home Care Apps arranges registered nurse home visits across Peninsular Malaysia, subject to nurse availability in your area. If your doctor advises nursing care at home after a hospital stay, we can explain what a visit includes and what it costs before you decide. Send an enquiry or try the free care assessment.
