Does My Medical Card Cover a Nurse at Home in Malaysia?

Who we are: Home Care Apps Team

Quick answer: Your medical card covers a nurse at home only if its policy has a home nursing benefit; plans we read limit it by days after discharge (7, 30 or 31), and some list none. Check your wording and Product Disclosure Sheet and ask your insurer in writing before the first visit. Facts checked October 2026.

Key points

  • Some cards pay: a few plans have a separate home nursing line with limits.
  • Some list none: other plans mention only post-hospitalisation treatment.
  • Conditions apply: days after discharge, a doctor's recommendation, and the nurse's qualification.
  • Check before booking: ask your insurer in writing before the first visit.

Does my medical card cover a nurse at home after surgery?

Only if your policy has a home nursing benefit, and the plans we read word it narrowly. A medical card is the everyday Malaysian name for a hospital and surgical insurance or takaful (Islamic mutual-protection) plan. It mainly pays for a hospital stay. Home nursing, where it exists, is a separate line in the schedule of benefits (the list of what a plan pays, and its limits) with its own conditions. Prudential Malaysia's own guide says "coverage for home nursing care can vary" (Prudential Malaysia).

Two other places matter: the post-hospitalisation treatment line, which pays for care after discharge, and the exclusions list, where "private nursing" often appears. Terms differ by plan, so the wording and Product Disclosure Sheet (the insurer's short summary of a plan's benefits and limits) in your own policy decide, not this page.

What do real medical cards say about home nurse care after discharge?

They say very different things, as these examples from insurers' own documents show.

Plan and document After discharge (treatment) Home nursing
Allianz MediCure, wording 03/25 Follow-up by the same attending doctor, up to 60 days Within 7 days of discharge, after 3 days or more in hospital; RM500 to RM4,000 by plan
Liberty Medistar, VER0426 (undated) Within 31 days Within 31 days of discharge; RM100 to RM175 by plan
AIG Medical Care, 1 September 2018 Within 30 days Maximum 30 days following discharge; one visit a day
Etiqa MedicMate Takaful, page (undated) "As Charged", within 90 days Not listed on the page
PruBSN Medic Plan, May 2020 Within 90 days Not listed; private nursing excluded

The AIG and PruBSN documents are older and plans change, so treat this as a picture of how much terms differ, not as a current benefit list.

What conditions do plans attach to home nursing?

The policies we read attach conditions, and a visit outside them may not be paid. Look for these:

  • A hospital stay first. Allianz asks for at least three days in hospital. A sample Zurich group policy pays home nursing only if "an earlier claim paid for In-Hospital Benefits" exists (Zurich).
  • A start window. Allianz needs the care "within seven (7) days following the Insured Person's discharge".
  • A doctor's say-so. Allianz says "prescribed by the original attending Medical Practitioner". AIG, Liberty and Zurich say the attending physician must recommend it.
  • A qualified nurse. Allianz asks for a "State-registered or Government-licensed nurse". AIG asks for a qualified professional nurse who is not an immediate family member.
  • Minimum hours. The Zurich sample asks for "a minimum duration of four (4) hours each Day" and applies only if the schedule lists the benefit.

A short visit may not meet a rule like that, so ask before you book.

Is private nursing the same as home nursing?

No: policies treat them as different lines, and they can sit in the same policy. Allianz and Liberty each list a home nursing benefit and also name "private nursing" among their exclusions. PruBSN, Zurich's group sample and Great Eastern's Easi HealthCare page also list private nursing as excluded.

AIG's wording has no exclusion named "private nursing". So hiring a nurse on your own, outside the conditions of the home nursing line, may fall under the exclusion. Your insurer decides which line a visit belongs to, which is why you read both the benefit and the exclusions.

What does MediAsas say about a nurse at home?

MediAsas, the new basic plan in pilot, has a named home nursing benefit: up to RM3,000 a year and a maximum of 90 days per lifetime. MediAsas is a voluntary medical plan sold by licensed insurers and takaful operators. The pilot started at the end of July 2026 in the Klang Valley, and a nationwide launch is planned for January 2027 (Ministry of Finance, 6 July 2026; Malay Mail, 9 October 2026).

The BNM pilot FAQ (Version 1, 29 July 2026) lists "Post-Hospitalisation Home Nursing Care" at Appendix I item 13: "As charged, up to RM3,000 per year". Exclusion 15 removes private nursing, except that benefit. The FAQ does not say which nursing tasks count, whether a doctor's letter is needed, or how the 90 days are counted. Pilot terms may change at the national launch. Details: Does MediAsas cover home nursing after hospital discharge? and the RM3,000 and 90 days explained.

How do I find out for sure before the first visit?

Ask your insurer before the first visit, and get the answer in writing. BNM's pilot FAQ (C11) says to "understand your coverage, eligibility and claims process before seeking treatment, where possible". A guide reported by Malay Mail says to ask your doctor, insurer or agent whether your insurance covers the treatment.

  1. Find your schedule of benefits and Product Disclosure Sheet. For a company card, ask HR.
  2. Mark the home nursing line, the post-hospitalisation line and the exclusions.
  3. Ask your doctor whether a nurse visit is advised, and ask your insurer what paperwork it wants.
  4. Call your insurer or agent. Ask about the start window, any days or RM limit, a minimum stay, the nurse's qualification, pay first or cashless, and any claim deadline.
  5. Ask them to confirm by email or letter, and keep it.
  6. After each visit, keep the itemised invoice, receipt and visit report.
  7. If a claim is rejected, appeal to the insurer first, then ask the Financial Markets Ombudsman Service (FMOS) or BNMLINK (FAQ C22).

What does a nurse visit from Home Care Apps look like on paper?

Home Care Apps arranges registered nurse home visits across Peninsular Malaysia, subject to nurse availability in your area. Our published "from" prices, excluding SST, as shown on our home page on 16 October 2026: wound dressing from RM160 (45 to 60 minutes), medication administration (oral and injection) from RM127 (20 to 30 minutes) and IV therapy, peripheral only, from RM250 (60 to 90 minutes). See the services page.

After a visit we provide a post-visit clinical report. Families can use it as supporting paperwork; the insurer decides whether to pay. Visit length matters because some plans set minimum hours or start windows. To list the care you may need before you call your insurer, try the free care assessment (a general guide, not a medical diagnosis). For the two most common visit types, see wound dressing at home and injections or an IV drip at home.

FAQ

Does my medical card cover a nurse at home after surgery?

Only if your policy has a home nursing benefit and the visit meets its conditions. The plans we read set a start window or day limit, and some list no home nursing line. Check your wording, then ask your insurer in writing.

What is a post-hospitalisation benefit?

It is a line in the schedule of benefits that pays for treatment after discharge, within a set number of days. The periods we saw were 30 days (AIG), 31 days (Liberty), 60 days (Allianz) and 90 days (Etiqa MedicMate Takaful, PruBSN and MediAsas). It is separate from home nursing.

Does a company medical card cover home nursing?

Your employer's schedule of benefits decides, so ask HR for it. In a sample Zurich group wording, home nursing is "not applicable unless specified in Schedule of Benefits". See company card and MediAsas.

What should I ask my insurer in writing?

Ask whether home nursing is covered after your surgery, the start window and any days or RM limit, whether short visits qualify, what your doctor must write, and whether you pay first. Ask them to confirm before the first visit. Our guide to questions to ask your insurer before surgery has more.
