What Happens at the First Home Nurse Visit in Malaysia

Who we are: Home Care Apps Team

Quick answer: Expect the nurse to check how the person is, do the booked task, such as a dressing change, and answer your questions. Our listed visits run 20 to 90 minutes, so ask what your visit includes when you enquire. Facts checked October 2026.

Key points

  • Book by enquiry; the team confirms availability within one working day.
  • Have the discharge papers and medicine list ready.
  • Listed visits run 20 to 90 minutes, depending on the service.
  • Ask whether a post-visit report follows each visit.
  • We send nurses only: no caregivers, equipment or overnight cover.

How does booking a first visit work?

On our enquiry page, you say who the visit is for, give the patient's details and visit address, choose the care needed, and can add a message and upload a medical report (PDF or JPEG, up to 5MB). The page says the order is "not yet confirmed" until the team contacts you, within one working day, to confirm availability; then a nurse is matched and confirmed. Our contact page calls WhatsApp the fastest way to reach us for bookings. If no nurse is found or a nurse does not show up, the enquiry page promises a full refund. Our home page FAQ says cancelling more than 24 hours ahead gets a full refund and under 24 hours gets 50%; check the site for current terms. Not sure what to book? Try the free care assessment, a general guide and not a medical diagnosis.

What should I have ready?

Have these to hand, and ask the person's family or main carer to be there if they can:

  • The discharge papers, doctor's instructions and follow-up slip
  • A list of all medicines, ideally with the boxes
  • Any referral letter or medical report (you can upload one when you enquire)
  • A clean, well-lit surface near the person for the nurse's supplies (this is practical advice, not a rule)

VNS Health, a US home health agency, advises having your discharge instructions and a list of medications ready to show the nurse, and says the nurse will answer questions from you or your caregivers (VNS Health). In Malaysia, Hospital Tumpat's discharge checklist shows the papers a family may be given: a medicine prescription slip, a follow-up treatment slip and a referral letter if needed (Hospital Tumpat). The Home Nursing Foundation in Singapore lists patient and caregiver training among its home nursing areas (HNF), so write down the questions you want answered about daily care at home. See what a home nurse does after discharge.

What does the nurse check and do?

It depends on the service you book. This table shows what our home page lists for five visit types as of 23 October 2026; the page says the nurses are registered nurses (a registered midwife for post-natal care) (home page).

Visit What it includes (our home page) Listed length
Wound dressing Wound assessment, irrigation, dressing change, infection monitoring 45 to 60 minutes
Catheter care Insertion, maintenance, bag change, UTI monitoring 30 to 45 minutes
Medication administration Compliance monitoring and patient education 20 to 30 minutes
Post-discharge monitoring Vital signs and early deterioration detection 60 to 90 minutes
Post-natal nursing care Maternal and newborn assessment, breastfeeding support 60 minutes

Overseas, VNS Health says its nurse reviews the plan of care, discharge instructions, follow-up appointments, vital signs, wound or incision sites and medicines at a first visit (VNS Health). Our "from" prices, excluding SST, are wound dressing RM160, catheter care RM191, medication administration RM127, post-discharge monitoring RM200 and post-natal nursing care RM220. See wound dressing at home and how much a home nurse costs per visit.

How long does the first visit take?

Our listed lengths run from 20 to 30 minutes (medication administration) up to 60 to 90 minutes (post-discharge monitoring). The site does not say whether a first visit takes longer than later ones, so ask when you enquire. Lengths differ elsewhere: VNS Health says its first visit may last up to 3 hours, depending on your needs (VNS Health). That is a US agency's visit model, not ours. If you have more than one task, ask when you enquire whether the listed length covers all of them and includes time to explain the task to you.

What is the post-visit clinical report?

Home Care Apps says it provides a detailed post-visit clinical report that can be submitted for reimbursement claims, and our enquiry page lists a "post-visit clinical report sent to your email" (home page). The site does not say what the report contains or whether one follows every visit, so ask when you enquire. Whether an insurer accepts it depends on your plan; the site says to check with your insurer directly. Read what a home nursing report should include before your first visit, and ask for the nurse's name so you can check the registration (see how to check a home nurse is registered).

What does a first visit not include?

A nurse visit is not a doctor's review, and the care assessment is only "a general guide, not a medical diagnosis". Ask your doctor before any change to medicines. Home Care Apps only provides registered nurses, so a visit does not include a caregiver's help with bathing, feeding or turning. We do not supply or refer beds, wheelchairs or other equipment. IV therapy is standard peripheral only, with no central line. We do not promise overnight or 24-hour cover, and a visit lasts minutes to a few hours. Nurse visits are also subject to nurse availability in your area. If your relative needs round-the-clock help, read nurse, caregiver or maid.

What to do next

  • Gather the discharge papers, doctor's instructions and medicine list.
  • Decide which tasks you need help with, and write down your questions.
  • Ask what the visit includes, how long it takes and what the report covers.
  • Ask the insurer in writing if you plan to claim.
  • Try the free care assessment or send an enquiry.
